In honor of retiring Dean of the Faculty Henry Rosovsky, the University has established a discretionary fund to support junior science professors.

New Dean A. Michael Spence and his successors will use the fund to help young scientists begin research in the initial years of their time at Harvard.

Harvard has long had a reputation of neglecting its junior faculty and scientists say it is difficult to secure research funding before establishing a reputation.

"There is certainly a problem, especially in the sciences, that you need money to support yourself," said assistant professor of Astronomy Stephen M. Kent. "The fund would certainly serve in a positive light"

The fund was initiated with a grant from Boston businessman Langdon T. Clay '50 as part of Harvard's ongoing fund drive, the Campaign.
