The Institute Of Politics (IOP) last week named three writers of The Crimson Harvard's finest political journalists.
Recipients of the annual "Harvard Political Journalists of the Year Awards" were: Christopher J. Georges '86-'87 of North House and Brooklyn, NY; Michael W. Hirschorn '86 of Dunster House and New York, NY; and Thomas J. Winslow '87 of Eliot House and Cleveland, OH. Honorable mentions went to Hirschorn and to Harvard Salient Managing Editor Caleb Nelson '88 of Lowell House and Cleveland.
A panel of political journalists evaluated about 60 student submissions, and granted awards in the areas of news, analysis-commentary and opinion-commentary. All of the submissions had been published during 1985.
Georges, the publisher of The Crimson, won in the news category for his article "Prof Gave CIA Censorship Right on Book," which reported on a Harvard professor's undisclosed contract with the Central Intelligence Agency.
Hirschorn, The Crimson's former managing editor, received an award for his analysis-features article, "Little Men On Campus." The piece appeared in The New Republic last summer. Hirschorn also received an honorable mention for his "Opinion Factories," which appeared this October in the Crimson's weekly magazine, What Is To Be Done?
The opinion-commentary award went to Winslow, The Crimson's managing editor for features, for "A Harsh Silence." The piece investigates the university's practices as a landlord in Cambridge, concentrating on a rape at a Harvard-owned apartment building.
Nelson's piece on abortion, "A Mockery Of Choice," received an honorable mention.
