IN THE Democratic race for lieutenant governor, State Rep. Marjorie Clapprood of Sharon, Mass., is a clear favorite for the post. The only woman candidate for a statewide post in either party, Clapprood has a distinguished record as a legislator as well as 11 years experience in the field of health care.
She has campaigned as a strong pro-choice candidate and a strong supporter of welfare benefits. In addition, she opposes the potentially disastrous CLT petition.
On the Republican side, State Sen. Paul Cellucci of Marlboro is running on an unofficial slate with gubernatorial candidate William F. Weld '66. We support Cellucci for much the same reasons we support his running mate--both are fiscally conservative but progressive on social issues such as abortion.
In contrast, Cellucci's opponent, State Rep. Peter Torkildson is a potential nightmare, a strict conservative who supports the death penalty, backs the CLT petition and opposes gay rights initiatives.
