M. Soccer: '91 Season All Tied Up

By Peter I. Rosenthal

The Harvard men's soccer team finished the 1991 campaign with a game that epitomized its performance this season: a 0-0 tie against Brown.

Granted, the Crimson (7-7-1, 3-3-1 Ivy) was shorthanded. Senior Jeremy Amen was forced to sit out because he had garnered five yellow cards this season. Sophomore Joe Bradley and senior Don Daigle went down with injuries and were unavailable for second-half action.

Considering Harvard's three-man-down disadvantage, the Crimson did not do all that badly. It is the sour taste, however, of an 0-4-1 overtime record that lingers.

"In the first half, we were in complete control," Harvard Coach Mike Getman said. "The guys played very hard defensively, but it was frustrating to end the season on such a disjointed note."

Increased Productivity

When you look at the final statistics, Harvard was much more productive this season than last and played a much more difficult schedule.

The Crimson scored 22 times, led by Jason Luzak (3 goals, 8 assists, 14 points) and Daigle (5-2--12). Luzak received first team all Ivy honors along with Captain Brien Enge, and Daigle and freshman Pepper Brill (3 goals) earned all Ivy honorable mention accolades.

In goal, Jamie Reilly had an outstanding season, notching four shutouts and a 1.49 goals-against average.

Despite strong performances and solid numbers, however, Harvard managed only a .500 season.

Next Year?

So what does next season--without seven graduating seniors--hold in store for the Crimson faithful?

"I don't think our style will be drastically different," Getman said. "We'll probably be stronger defensively, but with some question marks."

How many question marks????
