Heavyweight Boxer Honored by Lampoon

About 150 people watched challenger George Foreman win an upset victory this weekend in the title fight for the Harvard Lampoon's "Man of the year" award.

Former heavyweight boxing champ Foreman took on Lampoon member Sean P. "Rick the Stick" Kelly '92 in a three-round fight on the steps of the Lampoon Castle in the culmination of a series of events honoring Foreman.

The fight for the title was preceded by a press conference during which the Lampoon's 160-pound champion and his trainer outshouted Foreman.

The fight itself didn't exactly follow World boxing Association rules. For example, foreman and Kelly read poetry while eating doughnuts during the second round.

The last round was an actual boxing contest. Kelly and friends pounded on Foreman, and the boxer didn't throw a single punch. He was declared the winner anyway.

Lampoon President Matthew R. Grenby '93 then presented Foreman with a championship belt.

In his acceptance speech, Foreman formally announced that he was pursuing the U.S. presidency. His major campaign promise was to make sure that people selling banana splits put whole bananas in them.

Lampoon members threw "George Foreman for President" buttons into the crowd, and cheered the 280-pound candidate.

Foreman ended his speech with words of advice to Harvard community. "Always remember--to remember," he said.

Lampoon members said they selected Forman not just because he is a great sports figure, but also because he is "really interesting and willing to laugh at himself."

According to 'Poonster David J. Kennedy '93, the Lampoon hosted a dinner for Foreman Friday night at which the ex-boxing champ was served "nouvelle cuisine--two tiny pieces of shrimp, three slices of zucchini, one or two capers and a slice of parsley."

Kennedy said Foreman was disappointed with themeager servings, and was brought another plate ofthe same.

But Foreman remained frustrated--until Lampoonmembers brought out hundreds of McDonalds'shamburgers and a steak for him, Kennedy said
