WORCESTER, Mass.--An intrepid Crimson reporter had the opportunity to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the party for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy '54-'56 at the Democratic convention last weekend.
With an anonymous Kennedy staffer, who also happens to be a Crimson editor, he discovered what a six-term senator serves to two thousand hungry convention delegates inside a crowded ballroom at the Marriott Hotel in Worcester.
Numerous round tables spaced throughout the ballroom contained bountiful spreads of wheat crackers, yellow corn tortilla chips, cubes of various white and orange cheeses, and salsa.
Occasionally, tables would also have vegetables and dip or a silver platter containing one of two hot appetizers chosen by the senator--miniature quiches or meatballs in a tomato sauce.
The Kennedy staffer called Kennedy's gourmet selections "not so good."
Another Kennedy volunteer, who also preferred to remain nameless, said the food was far from gourmet because kennedy was trying to feed 2,000 people.
"The food is not that high quality," the volunteer said. "But you have a lot of hungry people."
This volunteer also complained about Kennedy's beverage selection. Kennedy's beverage selection. Kennedy offered a free glass of wine or a beer to each convention delegate, but Marriott banquet services charged $1.75 for a glass of pop.
But kennedy knew to whom he needed to give high-quality food. In a roped-off area open only to reporters, Kennedy provided a spread of submarine sandwiches, meat-filled and cheese-filled croissant, potato chips, and free cans of cold pop.
The anonymous Kennedy staffer wished she could find her Crimson press credentials so she could savor a croissant sandwich, at which she marveled because it contained roasted peppers.
