Harvard Dominates Princeton

By Jonathan Lehman, Crimson Staff Writer

It took facing the Tigers for the No. 7 Harvard women's hockey team to show its stripes.

The Crimson (9-1-0, 9-1-0 ECAC) powered to a dominating 5-0 win over Princeton (8-2-2, 8-2-1) on Saturday at Baker Rink in New Jersey, on the strength of two goals by sophomore Jenny Brine and a shutout by freshman netminder Christina Kessler in only her second career start.

Harvard held a narrow edge in shots on goal, 31-30, but special teams and goaltending tipped the scales. The Crimson, the top-ranked power play in the country, went 2-for-8 with an extra skater, and held the Tigers without a goal in six attempts with a man advantage.

Brine, who notched the game-winner at the 5:19 mark of the second period after a scoreless opening frame, leads the nation with 1.5 goals per game and 11 power-play tallies. Seniors Julie Chu and Katie Johnston and sophomore Sarah Wilson were the other goal scorers, while senior Lindsay Weaver and junior Laura Brady had two assists apiece.

Kessler, for her part, made 30 saves, including 15 during a busy first period in a game-changing effort.

Harvard, winners of six in a row, kicks off its nonconference slate next weekend when it hosts Minnesota-Duluth for a pair of games.
