What You Could Do During that Extra Hour
If there’s one thing that Harvard students love to do, it’s productivitymaxx. Whether it’s losing sleep for your midterm project, severing all social ties for your thesis, or getting on the treadmill while doing your pset, schoolwork comes at a price. But November 1st marks the only day of the year when we get an extra hour. With clocks falling back, here’s a list of all the things that you could do with that precious extra hour…
Wash your water bottle
Yes, I am calling everyone out. Wash. Your. Water. Bottle. I know, I know, I’m in the midterm slump, too. I understand that it’s all too easy to tell yourself you’re tired and deserve a break after hours of work. But if we’re being honest, more often than not, this break means avoiding some basic best practices, like frequently washing your water bottle. Yes, I know it’s just water, BUT there’s still bacteria in that bottle. Think about how crazy Halloweekend was. Do you seriously wanna keep sipping on those germs? Break out the Dawn and get scrubbing!!
Train for the Cambridge Half
Let’s be honest, how many of us actually prepped for the Cambridge Half? With midterms, homework, parties, and more, setting aside the appropriate amount of time to train for a half marathon hasn’t been a top priority. With the half beginning in the morning of the 1st, take that extra hour to start training. Do some warm-ups, get the blood flowing, and, before you know it, you’ll hit a PR. Or at the very least, make it across the finish line.
Knit a very small sweater
I’ve always admired people who can knit. During this hour, you could learn to knit and create a sweater. Given the time constraints, I’m sure the sweater would have to be very, very small. Still, this doesn’t discredit the effort and reward of learning a new skill. Besides, if it’s small enough, it will fit the mouse that stalks your dorm perfectly. Hell, even Stuart Little would be jealous.
Learn how to turkey call
You and I both know the turkeys are the real stars of Harvard Square. They frequently rule the road by blocking traffic and traverse the sidewalks to stalk their next pedestrian victim. As such, you should learn how to turkey call. By learning the proper techniques, you can ensure the turkeys will tie their loyalty to you. Before you know it, you’ll have a Butterball army. The only downside is that Thanksgiving might be a little more awkward this year.
Call your mom
I know the semester ends in a month and a half (yikes, sorry to remind you of f*nals) and for a lot of us that means seeing our families again. But please —on behalf of your mother — give her a call. Indulge the woman a little, open up about your life and share just a glimpse into your college experience (although perhaps leave out the last time you cleaned your room or ate a proper meal). Of course, this doesn’t just apply to all of the lovely Harvard moms out there. Call your dad, or your dog, or really whoever! All that matters is signaling that your midterms didn’t actually kill you. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get some cash or an Amazon care package afterward.
I’m sure there are plenty of other great uses of your time to add to this list, but these are a few non-academic pursuits you could choose during daylight savings. While you may have missed out this year, at least you have ideas for next year (if it’s even still around). Besides, would you rather just work on more psets? Of course not! So grab that turkey call and get to work.
