How to Survive Midterms
Well, well, well…you know what time it is: midterm season. Everyone’s favorite part of the semester. Whether you are trying to complete your senior thesis in time or grinding that Expos paper, we are all in the midst of the deepest of trenches. In times like these, coping is surely needed. Here are some of the best (and maybe a bit unhinged) ways to make your season a bit better.
1. Be in denial
Midterms? Never heard of her. Delusion isn’t looking so bad right now. Walk into that bar that you’ve bookmarked for the past year. Stand in that heinously long line for Berryline to satisfy your nightly sweet treat craving. What is studying, anyway?
2. Procrastinate
It can’t be easier than this. I’m sure everyone has experience with it (I easily clock 24 hours/day!), and with the mountainous workload that only grows as the days pass, it’s looking like a really ideal solution for me right now. Future me is likely to despise present me, but oh well… Yes, that pset can wait until you finish the long procrastinated yap session with your blockmates. So can your 200-page readings. You’ll eventually get to them later, as you always promise yourself, right? Just like you always rewatch those Panopto lectures…
3. Call someone from home
Wholesome moment!! Emotional support is crucial—and I hate to be the one to break it to you that your TF is not the right person to play therapist with. They will probably only add to the stress you are already overwhelmed with. Don’t forget that sometimes, your biggest cheerleaders are only a phone call away, wherever home is for you.
4. Reflect on your life
Instead of locking in like everyone and their mother at Widener, scroll through your photos and reflect on the different eras of your life. It’s quite shocking how far you’ve come, and you’ll shed a tear looking back at both the good and the bad times. Then you’ll feel the urge to curate a brand new Spotify playlist on this strange feeling that lingers in the back of your mind. Before you know it, the library will close, and studying won’t be possible anymore. Shucks.
5. Manifest
Recite “I will get a 100 on all my finals” 100 times until your friends can feel the successful energy radiating from you. Scroll on TikTok until you find that fortune teller who tells you good things are coming your way. Write your name and your dream midterm grades on a sticky note and tuck it under your pillow. Do everything possible to make sure the midterm gods will be on your side. You’ll thank me later, trust.
6. Actually study…
This might be the worst-case scenario. However, it might also be necessary for the outcome you want. Long gone are the days of caffeine, a quizlet, and a prayer (thank you, AC :/). Becoming a lamonster for the night would mean people would see you at your worst, but that crash-out might be worth it if it means a decent grade on your exam.
The most important reminder for you is that your grades don’t define your worth. Please stop comparing yourself to others, and take a moment to acknowledge that you are here for a very good reason. Best of luck with midterms, everyone!
