ELEANOR.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

IT was the time of evening, Eleanor,

That saw me gazing at the countless stars;

The crescent moon rose brighter than before,

Crowning the night as triumphs crowning wars.

But at the full tide of my joy, the moon -

O, beautiful ! - sank slowly to the sea;

In cloudy graves the stars died one by one,

Till darkness covered all the world and me.

So in the fulness of my darker days

Had risen thy love to chase away the night;

And all my thoughts, like stars, with glancing rays

Poured from my heart's glad heaven a purer light.

And now this life is darkened, Eleanor!

Thy love sets moonlike into Hope's dark sea;

My starry thoughts are wrapt forevermore

Within the black grave of thy treachery.
