THE LACROSSE TWELVE.

HOW THE TEAM IS PLAYING.

The season has now well advanced, so that a fair estimate of the playing can be made. Despite the rainy tendency of the weather up to date the men have worked hard and more than once have shown themselves indifferent to a wetting. Today the first game of the season takes place on Jarvis against the picked American team, and considerable interest is manifested as to the showing which our twelve will make. Thirteen men, one being a substitute, have been ordered to report on the grounds. They have played in the following positions in practice : Easton, L. S., goal ; C. J. Rueter, '84, point ; J. M. Goodale, '85, cover-point ; H. M. Williams, '85, captain and first defence field ; G. G. Bradford, '86, second defence field ; F. L. Churchill, '86, third defence field ; E. S. Abbot, '87, centre ; W. N. Roundy, '85, and Henning, C. S., forward field ; E. I. K. Noyes, '85 and W. A. Henry, L. S., home field ; F. C. Hood, '86, second home ; E. F. Woods, '85, first home.

The game played by the offence is particularly strong, some of their throws at goal from the side being very accurate. Henry is playing a brilliant game, takes the ball out of a crowd easily and throws well, but is apt to "play" with the ball on his crosse too long before throwing. Hood has an effective throw for goal, but should vary it, and try to insure greater accuracy. Woods plays an effective game close in goal, but should be a little more careful not to miss easy "swipes." Noyes dodges and runs well, and throws a hard line shot. His chief fault is "Monkeying with the ball" before picking it up. The fielders are playing rather a loose game and do not support each other enough. Roundy is effective in covering his man, but does not start quickly for the ball, and when he gets it, either runs too long, or throws it without looking to see whom to pass it to. Churchill is a new man, and as such is doing well, playing with much life. He should learn to pick up the ball more readily and play together with his fellows. Henning is a new man at Harvard, but has played before. His work is very graceful, and his throwing clear and accurate. He catches and runs well. A little harder playing and more care to hold the ball safely when he gets it would improve him. Abbot, at centre, runs fast and handles his crosse with much ease-catching and throwing well. He should be careful not to swipe, and should drop his balls a little nearer to goals. The defence field show the need of more practice. The reason for this is that the offence men keep the ball so well in hand at their end of the field that defence men fail to get their share of work. In today's game they will probably have enough to occupy their attention. Bradford plays brilliantly at times. and runs very fast, but misses overhand throws. He should be a little more sure on defence, and try catching long flies. Williams follows in on the ball quickly, throws and catches fairly, but holds the ball to long and needs to use his overhand throw more. Goodale plays a very safe and steady game at cover point, throws and itches well, but needs to pick up more quickly. Rueter's throwing and catching are very fine, but he needs greater care in picking up. Easton handles his stick and uses his body well between the goal post. His throws are long, but he picks up rather slowly. He should also run faster when out of goal. The whole team need more agility in picking the ball out of a scrimmage, in effective body-checking, and in following up the ball.
