Foot-Ball Practice.

A LARGE NUMBER OF CANDIDATES PRESENT THEMSELVES.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In accordance with the call of Captain Kimball, over fifty men appeared on Jarvis yesterday afternoon prepared to play foot-ball. Never before have so many candidates presented themselves, or has so much enthusiasm been manifested by the players. To be sure all did not intend to try for positions on the team, but the large number who were there ready to play shows conclusively that interest in the manly game is not on the wane at Harvard, to say the least. The majority of the men were not heavy, but of good size, and the prospects are that a team can be selected fully as heavy as last year's.

Of old 'varsity team men there presented themselves, Kimball, '86, Adams, '86, Brooks, '87, and Peabody, '87. Willard, '87, and Burgess, '87, of last year's team, will also play, and there is a very strong probability that Appleton, '84, captain of the '83 eleven, and Phinney, of last year's team, formerly a member of the Princeton 'varsity, will consent to play. Both these men are now in the Law School. It is also thought that Twombley, L. S., the veteran quarter of Yale's eleven, may be induced to play against all teams except that of his alma mater. The following men who have had considerable experience in foot-ball appeared as candidates: from '86, Woodbury, Baker, Roberts, Churchill, Burnett; '87, Russell, Fiske, Endicott, Carmalt, Bowen; '88, Porter, Woodman, Churchill, Noble, Butler, Cabot and Homans, '89 presented a large number of candidates, among whom were Agassiz, Perry, Grew, Merrill, Ruland, Endicott, Dustan, Trafford.

After some preliminary rushing, passing and kicking, the men began to get limbered, and two sides were selected by Captain Kimball. A short game was played, throughout which the men were coached by Kimball, assisted by Adams, '86. Of course they played in no form, but they show a determination to do all that was in their power to revive the game. By Monday the field will be marked out, and everything will be in readiness for hard work. In the mean time practice will go on.
