The "Electra" of Sophocles.

Professors Goodwin, White, and Wright of the Greek department, and Mr. Hayes, who has the work in elocution, have become much interested in the forthcoming matinee performance on April 25th, at the Hollis St. Theatre, of the "Electra," of Sophocles, by the students of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. established in the Lyceum Theatre, New York city. Mr. Franklin H. Sargent, a Harvard graduate, and former instructor in the university, is the director of the Dramatic Academy, and has had for his associates in that institution many theartical professionals. In New York the "Electra" was presented with great success, receiving the approval of leading educational and dramatic authorities. At Columbia college the students were given a half-holiday, and at the conclusion of the matinee witnessed by them, they gave loud calls for the author. In the Boston production at the Hollis Street Theatre, there will be shown as perfect a reproduction of the ancient Greek theatre of Sophocles time as is possible on a modern stage. Yet under Mr. David Belasco's stage management, the "Electra" will have a complete theatrical finish, with a thoroughness of stage effects, lights, casting and ensemble never before attempted in a classic play. The music and choral movements are as near to the Greek models as possible. The latter especially, are very intricate and conduce much to the spectacular effect of the play. In the cast are about twenty young women and ten young men, all students of the academy, preparing for, and in many instances, already on the professional stage. All the New York critics united in praising this production as most impressive, instructive and entertaining. There ought to be a large attendance of Harvard students at the matinee of April 25th.
