FRESHMAN BASEBALL.

The number of candidates for the Freshman baseball team has increased during the past week, so that now there are over forty men at work. The progress of the squad, on the whole, has been gradual, but steady, and the promise of a successful team is far more possible of fulfillment than it seemed two weeks ago.

The out-door practice will begin on Soldiers Field as soon as the weather permits. The squad will then be cut down as rapidly as possible in order that only the most promising candidates may be retained to practice during the Easter recess.

This year a new plan is being tried in regard to the leadership of the candidates. Heretofore a temporary captain has been appointed early in the season to take charge of the squad until the final election of a permanent captain. Now the plan is being tried of placing a new leader over the squad each week. He takes charge of the men during the Gymnasium exercises and the runs. Farrington of Groton, and Churchill of Andover have each been in charge for a week. At present Cutting of Groton is the leader. It is hoped that this alternating plan may prove an incentive to every man; since his earnestness may put him in his turn at the head of the squad.

The present coach, W. L. Garrison, Jr., will be unable to remain with the squad through the season, owing to his duties in the Law School. It is not as yet definitely decided who will succeed him, but it is hoped that Edmund Stephens '97, who had experience in coaching the Freshman nine last year, will consent to take charge of the work for the rest of the season.

The battery candidates are working with the 'Varsity squad and have regular hours under the supervision of Keefe and Captain Dean. There are now ten pitchers and six catchers out.

Of the pitchers, McCornick, who pitched on the Johns Hopkins team last year, is showing up the best. He has good speed and curves, but not very good control. F. M. Wilder has had little experience, but may develop into a good pitcher. Foster is fairly good; he has pitched on Boston Latin and Roxbury Latin teams. Schwill, a left hander, has a good in-ball, but no control. Sands has just joined the squad. He has fairly good speed.

Moore is the best of the catchers. H caught on the Cambridge Manual Training School team. Egbert and Skillings are also doing well.

It is desirable that more men join the squad. Battery men are especially needed.
