HARVARD, 3; BROWN, 1.

Stillman's Steadiness at Critical Times Wins a Close Game.

Harvard defeated Brown in a close game Wednesday by a score of 3 to 1. The cold weather and poor condition of the field made both pitching and fielding very difficult, and taking this into consideration both teams played well. Harvard did some hard hitting, but the victory was due rather to Stillman's steadiness with men on bases. Except for two errors in the eighth inning Harvard played a brilliant game in the field.

Stillman gave but one base on balls, allowed only six scattered hits and struck out nine men. Frantz played a fast game in the field, covered a great deal of ground, and at the bat made two timely singles. Wendell made two singles, but could not hit when men were on bases. Murphy, George and Putnam were again unable to hit satisfactorily. Reid was very fast on the bases, but not as steady as usual behind the bat.

With two out in the first inning Reid got a base on balls, went to second on Frantz's single and scored on Stillman's hit. In the second inning Coolidge opened with a single to centre field, went to second on Paine's muff of a throw, and to third on Putnam's out. George hit a slow ball to Barry, Paine muffed the throw and Coolidge scored. Harvard did not score again until the eighth inning. Then four successive singles by Reid, Frantz, Stillman and Devens, brought in the last run.

Brown's run came in the eighth inning. Barry singled to right, went to second on Devens's poor throw to first, and scored on Stillman's wild throw to catch Gray.
