A POOR GAME.

Bates Defeated 6 to 2.--Careless Batting and Fielding.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University nine defeated Bates yesterday by a score of 6 to 2, in the poorest game that has been played on Soldiers Field in two years. The batting of the team was wretched. Only four hits were made, and eight men struck out. With one exception, the first man to come to the bat in each inning failed to reach first base. The work in the field was no better than the batting; fumbles and inaccurate throwing resulting in ten errors, against two made by Bates. Harvard did all her scoring in the first two innings, only one man reaching second base during the remainder of the game.

Carr opened the first inning with a base on balls, was advanced to second on a sacrifice hit by Coolidge, and took third on a passed ball. Wendell reached first on a base on balls, Stillman followed in the same way, forcing Wendell to second; and all three scored on a home run by Clarkson. In the second inning Marshall got a base on balls, reached second on a single by Carr, and came home on a base-hit by Wendell, which advanced Carr to third, from where he scored on a wild pitch. Bates scored once in the fifth and once in the seventh inning. In the fifth inning Lang reached first on an error by Skilton, was advanced to third on errors by Clarkson and Kernan, and came home on a hit by Classon. Moody opened the seventh inning with a base-hit, was forced to second by Towne's sacrifice, and came home on a hit by Parson.
