Gift of Smelting Furnace

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Department of Mining has received notice of the gift of a lead smelting furnace, blower, and appliances by the Allis-Chalmers Company of Chicago, and the Wilbraham-Green Company of Philadelphia, both manufacturers of mining machinery. The furnace has a diameter of a little over a foot with a height of thirteen feet, and with the accessories is valued at about $700. It will be installed in the Heat Room of the Simpkins Laboratory. The furnace will form a valuable addition to the laboratory facilities of the courses in metallurgy. It will be used almost exclusively in smelting lead from ores found in New England.
