The symphony concert last night was especially enjoyable because of the well-chosen programme. It is a pleasure to find both Beethoven and Mozart symphonies given together. The "Fantasy" for Violin on Themes from Faust" relieved the formal numbers of the programme, and was rather more intelligible than modern music of this class. Mr. Bak, the soloist, combined good technical execution with a sympathetic interpretation of this selection. His tone though lacking in intensity, showed a great deal of expression.
The Mozart symphony though perhaps not showing the composer at his best gave some excellent instances of his skill in contrasting wind and string passages. The Beethoven Fifth Symphony, always a favorite, was given a vigorous all brilliant rendering. The precision of the double basses in the difficult passage in the Trio movement deserves especial praise.
