HARVARD WON IN HOCKEY.

Columbia Defeated in a Fast, Close Game.--Good Individual Playing.

The University hockey team won its first intercollegiate championship game of the season from Columbia on Saturday night, at the St. Nicholas Rink, New York City, by a score of 2 to 0. The game was clean and fast and very close, no goals being scored until the last four minutes of play, when Clothier and Souther each scored a goal within three minutes. During the first half, Columbia slightly outplayed the University team, twice passing the defense and being prevented from scoring only by the excellent work of Ivy at goal. In the second half, however, the superior individual play and better physical condition of the Harvard team outbalanced the better team-play of Columbia. The puck was kept in Columbia's territory most of the time and the University was allowed many opportunities to shoot. The good work of the Columbia goal was all that prevented the score from being larger, as the shooting, particularly that of Souther, was both hard and accurate.

The game showed the same lack of team-play that has been evident in practice throughout the season. Although the men are strong players individually, they cannot be considered a really strong team until they have overcome the lack of concerted play. The work of the backs was excellent, and the defense of the team as a whole was strong.

The summary: UNIVERSITY.  COLUMBIA. Newhall, r.e.  l.e., Cook Souther, r.c.  l.c., Duten Wilder, l.c.  r.c., Callaghan Townsend, l.e.  r.e., Aiken, Boty Clothier, c.p.  c.p., Benedict Carr, p.  p., Jackson Ivy, g.  g., Von Bernuth
