Professor T. W. Richards '86, has recently carried out chemical investigations under the auspices of the Carnegie Institute to determine the values of atomic weights and other fundamental properties of the elements. Professor Richards has submitted a memoir, about to be published by the Carnegie Institute, containing the records of his experiments on a new method of determining compressibility. By means of this method, the compressibility of bromide, iodine, chloroform, bromoform, and other substances has been determined over a range of seven hundred atmospheres. Experiments have also been carried out to determine the atomic weight of sodium, the heat capacities of solutions, and certain electrochemical relations of the elements. Associated with Professor Richards, in this work, have been the following members of the Graduate School: G. E. Behr, Jr., G. S. Forbes, A. B. Lamb, and R. C. Wells.
