HOCKEY PROSPECTS BRIGHT

Last Year's Defence Intact.--Good New Material.--No Work Yesterday.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

There is much good material in College this year from which A. Winsor '02, who has been reappointed coach of the hockey team, can pick the University seven. The defensive material is especially strong. O. M. Chadwick '11, goal, F. D. Huntington '12, point, and N. H. Foster '11, coverpoint, are again available. These men should develop a defence as strong as that of two years ago. Moreover, R. M. Blackall '12 and P. K. Houston '12, coverpoints, and H. B. Gardner '13 and S. B. Smart '12, goals, have all had experience either on the second or Freshman teams. The competition for goal should be extremely close as all the men are exceedingly good.

The forward line will be difficult to chose. R. Hornblower '11, captain of the University team, is the only regular left from last year. Four University substitutes have returned to College: D. F. Cutler '11, R. F. Duncan '12, H. C. Leslie '11, and R. B. Wigglesworth '12. W. B. Fraser-Campbell '11, of the second team, N. E. Paine '13, F. H. Palmer '13, G. M. Rushmore '13 and T. Gorham '13, of the Freshman team, are the most promising new candidates for the team. From these nine men, the three remaining forward positions will undoubtedly be chosen. As the rink of the Boston Arena is about 70 feet longer and 10 feet wider than the St. Nicholas rink in New York, the forwards must have greater endurance and speed, and better team-work must be developed than in former years.

Arena Rink Not Ready Yesterday.

Since the rink in the Boston Arena was not in condition, the team was unable to hold practice yesterday afternoon. If good ice can be made for this afternoon, all candidates will report dressed to play in the Arena at 5.30 o'clock. A notice will be posted in Leavitt & Peirce's if there is to be no work. As soon as the weather becomes cold enough for ice on Soldiers Field, the team will play on the rink in the Stadium. Candidates for Freshman team will be called out at that time.
