PROFESSOR GOODWIN DEAD

William Watson Goodwin '51, Eliot Professor of Greek Literature, emeritus, did at his home, 5 Follen street, last night of heart trouble from which he had been confined to his bed during the last week. He was 81 years of age and is survived by his wife.

Professor Goodwin was born at Concord, Mass., May 9, 1831. He received the degree of A.B. from the University in 1851 and later studied at the Universities of Gottingen, Berlin, and Bonn. He received the degree of Ph.D. from Gottingen and LL.D. from Amherst, Cambridge University, Columbia, Edinburgh, Chicago, and Yale. He was professor of Greek literature in the University from 1860 to 1901, and was an overseer from 1903 to 1909. He was also president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was an honorary member of several scientific and literary organizations in all parts of the world.

The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
