HAUGHTON TO SAVE REGULARS

PRACTICE YESTERDAY TAKEN UP BY REHEARSAL OF TUFTS TACTICS.

The University football squad had a long and hard practice yesterday afternoon, the first string men remaining on the defense during an hour and a half scrimmage against the second team. The coaches taught team B a number of Tufts' formations, and the University team was drilled in diagnosing and breaking up this attack.

From all appearances Coach Haughton will not use any of the regular backfield men this Saturday against Tufts. Hardwick, Logan and Mahan are still in a bruised and crippled condition, and Bradlee was well played out in last Saturday's encounter. All four of these players watched the practice from the side-lines yesterday.

The backfield yesterday was composed of Swigert, quarter; Whitney and McKinlock, halfbacks; and King fullback. This backfield combination has power and drive in hitting the line; but its weakness is apparent on the defense. Swigert, at quarter, tackles low and hard so that his ability partly makes up for any of the other's deficiencies in this respect. McKinlock and Whitney have both shown exceptional improvement in punting and drop-kicking.

With the exception of Pennock, who is still bothered by a bad knee, the University's line was intact. During the past week the linemen have had the advantage of excellent coaching in using their hands and eyes in diagnosing the opponent's play.

Elken, University substitute, has been added to the list of invalids; a minor injury to his leg bothering him considerably. B. Z. Nelson '15, the sprinter, has reported for football and an effort will be made to develop him as backfield material.

The line-up of the University eleven yesterday was as follows: l.e., J. Coolidge; l.t., R. C. Curtis; l.g., Withington; c., Soucy; r.g., Weston; r.t., Trumbull; r.e., Weatherhead; q.b., Swigert; l.h.b., McKinlock; r.h.b., Whitney; f.b., King.
