STUDENTS TO PRESENT OPERA

Production of "Orpheus" Next Spring a New Step in College Music.

The Radcliffe Choral Society and the University Glee Club are planning a significant progressive step in the field of college musical activity. They are to present the opera "Orpheus," by Christoph Wilibald von Gluck, in Sanders Theatre on Monday and Tuesday evenings, April 12 and 13, at 8 o'clock. This will be the first time in the history of undergraduate college music in America that the production of an opera has ever been seriously undertaken, and the outcome of the attempt will be watched with great interest. Dr. A. T. Davison '06, instructor in music in the University and the coach of the University Glee Club, and Mrs. H. H. Gallison, instructor of vocal music at Radcliffe, have launched the project and are planning to make it one of the most important events of the season. Sam Hume is to have charge of the staging of the production and Miss Virginia Tanner has consented to undertake the supervision of the chorus dancing. Members of the Boston Opera House orchestra, or of the Boston Symphony Orchestra will be secured for the accompaniments. Mrs. Gallison is to train the soloists, while Dr. Davison will coach the choruses.

The girls who are to sing the three solo parts of Orpheus, Enridice, and Amor, have not as yet been decided upon, although all the candidates have already been working on them for nearly a year. The choruses of Furies and Blessed Spirits will be made up of members of the Radcliffe Choral Society and the Harvard Glee Club, who will begin rehearsals shortly after Christmas.

The net proceeds of the production will be used for the benefit of the Radcliffe Choral Society Scholarships
