BASEBALL TEAMS TAKE FIELD

Candidates for the University and Freshman baseball teams will report in uniform on Soldiers Field today at 2 o'clock for the first fall practice of the season. Coach Sexton will again be in charge of the squad and wishes all men to report today if possible. Any player who does not work out this fall will not be allowed to join the squad in the spring unless he has previously been excused by the coach. Captain Ayres will assist Dr. Sexton in coaching the squad

Wendell Cup to Wingate.

The Barrett Wendell, Jr., baseball cup has been awarded to ex-Captain Dana Joseph Paine Wingate '14, of Winchester, who led the University nine in 1913 and 1914. It will be presented to him at a banquet to be given to the University baseball team early in December.

The silver loving cup, presented by Charles Hann '11, the first baseman on the 1911 championship nine, is awarded to the player showing the greatest alertness upon the diamond. It is presented to the man who has the highest total number of points reckoned on the following basis, each achievement to count one point:

(1) Safe arrivals at first base (this includes bases on balls, hits, and all other times the initial sack is reached).

(2) Sacrifice hits.

(3) Stolen bases.

(4) Runs scored.

It will be noticed that the cup is not necessarily given to the best hitter, the best fielder, or the fastest runner, but rather to the man who combines his hitting and running abilities to the best advantage to the team. The choice of the winner is by the baseball committee, the coach, and the donor.

Former Captain Wingate won the cup by exceptional baseball ability. He was twice elected captain of the University nine, besides leading his Freshman team.The Barrett Wendell, Jr.; Cup.
