By taking advantage of its opponents' loose playing the University baseball team defeated Colby 5 to 1 yesterday afternoon. The game was featured by poor playing, although but three errors were registered against each of the teams. Only one hit was made off Whitney, while James yielded three. Three University men reached first by intercepting James' wild pitches.
Three of the University's runs came in the second. Gannett doubled, Hardwick walked, and Mahan brought them both in with a long triple to left field. Mahan then came home on a passed ball. In the fourth two runs were scored by the University without a hit. Hardwick reached first on an error, and was advanced to second when Mahan was hit by a pitched ball. Waterman sacrificed and Beal walked, filling the bases. Another base on balls for Whitney forced in one run. Then James balked, scoring Mahan. Abbot and Reed grounded out.
Colby acquired its sole run in the first. Campbell walked and stole second. He proceeded to third on a fielder's choice, and was brought in when Deasy made the visitors' only hit. A chance to score in the sixth was passed up when Simpson failed to touch second as he was making the circuit on La Fleur's long drive.
