UNIVERSITY AND 1923 IN FINAL SCRIMMAGE

FIRST LINE IMPREGNABLE

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A surprise was sprung on the first University football team yesterday when Coach Paul Withington '09 brought Team A of 1923 into the Stadium for a scrimmage. This was the last scrimmage before the two games on Saturday, when the University come up against the fast Colby team and the Freshman meet Worcester Academy at Worcester.

The ball was first given to 1923 midfield. In four rushes they could gain only five yards through the heavy University line. Hereupon the ball was again given to the Freshmen on the University five-yard mark. They were told to "put it over." The University line held and forced 1923 to give up the ball. Seeing that the Freshmen could not break through the University line, the ball was given to Coach Fisher's men on the 30-yard line. Attempts to break through failed, so they punted; 1923 likewise punted, and the University carried the ball back to their own 40-yard line. At this time the University bucked up. On three successive runs M. Gratwick '22 carried the ball forward 10 to 15 yard. E. L. Casey Occ, then took the ball and broke through for 30 yard, making the first score.

Fisher Sends in Team B.

Coach Fisher took out the first team at this point, sending Team B into the scrimmage. A few plays later F. C. Church '20 tore through the field 70 yards for the second score.

Team C, which next opposed the Freshmen, scored on a safety. A forward pass was juggled by the Varsity and caught by a Freshman who was downed back of his own goal.

R. G. Hadley '20 started at left tackle for the University. It was behind him that Gratwick made most of his gains. C. A. Clark, Jr., Occ., put up a fine game at guard, R. T. P. Storer '14, captain of the 1913 team, visited the field for a few minutes.
