TITLE HOLDERS WILL DEFEND CHAMPIONSHIPS

Exciting Contests Promised in Coming Boxing Contest--Match Between Former Eli Captain and Howard Townsend '23 Should be Feature

With over 30 entries in the annual University boxing tournament, a number of close contests are in store for the final bouts on Friday evening. Three of last year's champions will defend their titles against strong challengers, many of whom were prominent in the 1921 tournament. One of the feature bouts will be that between Edward Eagan 1L. and Howard Townsend Jr. '23. Eagan was captain of the Yale boxing team in 1921 and gained the honor of representing the United States in the Olympic games at Antwerp. By winning his bout he won the amateur light heavy-weight championship of the world, a title which he still holds. Townsend is an experienced, clever boxer with a great deal of speed, but he has not competed before in a University tournament. Eagan is boxing in the heavy-weight class as there is no logical opponent in the lighter weights.

In the 115-pound class F. X. Collins '22 will defend his last year's title, while his probable finalist opponent will be B. H. McCurdy '21, who has shown marked ability in his training work. The feature of the 125-pound class should be a bout between Harry Brenner '23 and G. G. Tunell Jr. 4E.S. Brenner was runner-up last year and lost to H. J. Freedman '23 only by a close margin. Isadore Shapiro '23 was a formidable runner-up in the 1921 bouts for the 135-pound title and he is making a string bid for the championship honors this year. It is difficult to pick his logical opponent in the finals as there are several men of nearly equal strength who will contend for the position.

In the 145-pound class there will be a number of close bouts as last year's champion and runner-up will again be on hand with several strong opponents. R. LeB. Daggett '23 is the title holder, having won his bout last year. G. R. McLeod uL. was his opponent and will probably face him again in the final rounds of the class. Other logical contenders for the honors are G. B. Courtney '24, and T. B. Coolidge '23. The strongest man in the 158-pound class is Theodore Strong Jr. '22. In his Freshman year he won the lightweight championship, and only lost the honors last year because of an injury which forced him to withdraw. H. L. Hartley '23 may find a place in the final rounds but he will have stiff opposition in Wolcott Fuller E.S.
