Charles Proteus Steiuments L. '02, the scientist who was to have inaugurated the Josiah Willard Gibbs public lectures established by the American Mathematical Society as an aid to its endowment, funds has died recently, and the society has not as yet appointed any scientist to fulfill the position left vacant by him.

The Gibbs lectures, to be given yearly, have been named after the distinguished Yale scientist, Josish Willard Gibbs, who graduated from Yale in 1809 and who received an honorary degree at the University in 1818. Some man of outstanding reputation will be selected each year to speak.

The Mathematical Society, which aims to make the United States as eminent in mathematics as it is in astronomy, has had, among whom are Professor George D. Birkhoff '05. Chief editor of the society's publication. "The Transactions", and Professor J.L. Cooliders chairman of the council. They society's endowment Compton hopes to raise $100,00 to dietary expenses of publishing "The Transactions".
