WALSH-GILLETT RACE IS CLOSE

Outcome of Senatorial Contest in Doubt At Early Hour This Morning

The Senatorial race between Senator David I. Walsh, Democrat, and Frederick H. Gillett, Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, is one of the closest that Massachusetts has seen in years.

Both parties claimed the victory, but none of the Boston papers would concede the election to either man. Gillett was leading by a few thousand votes, according to reports received early this morning. There are still some districts in Boston yet to be heard from however, and these may give Walsh a big enough majority to give him the victory.

The closeness of this race is due largely to the fact that many Republicans, voting for Coolidge and Fuller, broke away from their party affiliations, and voted for the popular Democratic Senator.
