FOR THE BUSINESS SCHOOL

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The gift of $5,000,000 to Harvard University by Mr. George F. Baker of New York for the construction of new buildings for the Graduate School of Business Administration is as distinctive in the annals of American education as are the efforts of the School itself. After an apprenticeship of sixteen years, during which the Harvard Business School has been an outstanding influence in business education, it has been accorded recognition by one of the country's foremost business men. It has passed its most difficult test, and has become the subject of an enlightened interest, not only because of the value of its service, but also because it has informed the public of its purposes, methods, and achievements.

The most vital part of any true university which is to be more than a mere vocational school is of course its undergraduate college, which offers a general education in the liberal arts; but this need not detract from the importance of the various graduate schools, or divert attention from the character of the specialized services which they render. In the present instance, to these who are responsible for the increased growth and influence of the Harvard Business School, are due the congratulations of all who realize the dependence of the country's economic health upon business success, and upon character and straight thinking in business enterprise. To Mr. George F. Baker in particular, who after a life of service in American business, has seen fit to give so generously of his personal fortune to the perpetuation of the service of business, the enlargement of its utility, and the improvement of its standards, is due profound appreciation.
