HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
Cambridge Police Headquarters tomorrow afternoon will be the scene of a demonstration at which Harvard mettle will again be put to the test.
The occasion is an exhibition of bullet-proof vests which has been manufactured by the American Armor Company for the benefit of the Cambridge police. The latter, sticking to the old maxim that "seeing is believing", have, it appears, not yet been sufficiently convinced of the efficacy of the new protective shirts.
The company has accordingly arranged a public demonstration before a Mayor Quinn. Chief Inspector P. J. Hurley, and other municipal notables to prove the absolute safety of their vests. In order that the whole affair might be quite open and above board the Boston agents decided to get a Harvard man to appear as the wearer of the vest. An offer of $25 was made to any student who would brave the point-blank fire of a pistol in the interests of public safety and knowledge.
No sooner was the offer expressed than an adventurous Freshman, who happened to be within hearing, snapped it up. He was immediately accepted, and forthwith pledged himself to appear for the demonstration tomorrow afternoon at 3.15 o'clock.
The potential martyr to the advancement of science expressed a desire that his identity remain obscure until the saw whether the experiment would be successful or not.
