WATTS STROKES FIRST CREW TO DECISIVE WIN

FOUR LENGTH LEAD SHOWS EARLY POWER DEVELOPMENT

A mile and three-quarters handicap race Saturday afternoon marked the first official competition between the two University crews since Coach E. J. Brown '96 picked them last Monday. The eight stroked by Captain John Watts '28 showed exceptional power in this try-out by defeating the Second University boat with four lengths to spare, and leading a strong Ineligible combination by six lengths.

The trial regatta was held on the upper course between the Watertown Bridge and the curve above Gerry's Landing. At the start, the Ineligibles, stroked by L. D. Parker '30, were presented with a five length lead and the Seconds, paced by James Lawrence '29, with a two length handicap.

Before the initial quarter-mile sprint was over, the first crew, rowing 39 strokes to the minute, had overhauled the Junior boat and was gaining rapidly on the Ineligibles. From this point on, the race tightened, with all three boats stroking a steady 32-beat. In the closing half-mile straightaway, the Ineligibles failed to sprint in time to cover the determined rush started by Captain Watts and, had it not been for the clever steering of their coxswain, C. H. Pforzheimer '28, would have fallen more than a length behind. Open water still separated them from the Lawrence crew at the finish.

Coach Brown had originally scheduled the race to take place in the Charles River Basin but a brought time-trial experienced early in the afternoon by the first 150-pound crew of Coach C. S. Heard '25 convinced him that the lower course was unnavigable.

The lineups of the three crews as they started Saturday are as follows:

Crew A--Stroke, John Watts '28; 7, Guy Murchie '29; 6, F. A. Clark '29; 5, W. G. Saltonstall '28; 4, C. E. Mason '30; 3, W. T. Emmett '29; 2, J. DeW. Hubbard '29; bow, L. W. Dickey '30; cox., L. L. Wadsworth '30.

Ineligibles Stroke, L. D. Parker '30; 7, J. W. Dunlop '29; 6. W. H. Boldt '30; 5, J. G. Lewis '30; 4, James Roosevelt '30; 3, Daniel Codman '30; 2, Edward Faruham 1G.; bow, M. A. Lomasney '30; cox., C. H. Pforzheimer '28.
