By John S.P. Tatlock."

The following telegrams relative to the scholastic contest were exchanged yesterday afternoon between the English departments of Harvard and Yale. Yale's telegram:

"The members of our team and department unite in sending the Harvard team and English Department most cordial greetings. We heartily appreciate the privilege of sharing in the first intercollegiate competition under the generous provisions of the Putnam Memorial. We are glad to feel that our mutual aims and friendship are thus confirmed and strengthened. George H. Nettleton."

Harvard's reply:

"The members of the Harvard team and English Department highly appreciate your message, and heartily greet the Yale team and English Department. We rejoice that Harvard's first friendly opponents in the contest are our long-standing friends at Yale, and believe that the Putnam Memorial will advance our common interests. Our friendship has already been strengthened by Yale's generous spirit which we have felt throughout.
