SWEEZY IS RECIPIENT OF CAMBRIDGE AWARD

Seven Harvard Seniors who received their degrees today are the recipients of scholarships for travel or study abroad during the coming year, it was announced at University Hall this morning.

The highest award for study in residence abroad was awarded to Alan Richardson Sweezy of Englewood, New Jersey. This prize, known as the Lionel de Jersey Harvard Studentship for study at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, England, is awarded on the basis of all around ability to some Senior who will represent the University at Cambridge.

Sweezy received his degree Magna cum Laude, with Highest Honors in History, the first degree of the kind granted at Harvard. As an undergraduate, he distinguished himself in extra-curricular affairs as well as in scholarship, being President of the CRIMSON, a member of the Student council, and permanent Treasurer of his class.

The Harvard Studentship at Cambridge was held this year by Thomas Hopkinson Eliot, '28, grandson of the late President Eliot, prominent in undergraduate activities during the years 1924-28. The scholarship was founded in honor of Lionel de Jersey Harvard, a direct descendant of the founder of the University, who graduated from Harvard in 1915 and was killed while fighting for his country, England, during the War.

The highest traveling award open to a Senior, the Henry Russell Shaw Traveling Fellowship, was awarded to Raymond Finley Courtney, of Tulsa. Oklahoma, who graduated Summa cum Laude in Philosophy, and ranked as one of the two leading scholars in the graduating class.

Four fellowships have been awarded under the Sheldon Fund for travel and study abroad. Two of the recipients of these awards graduated Magna and two Summa cum laude. The income from the Sheldon Fund is distributed annually, and beside awards under the Fund to graduate students there are a number of grants made to Seniors who graduate with high standing and are eager to pursue their studies further.

Robert Croly Darling, of Hartford, Connecticut, Summa cum Laude in Chemistry, Harold Freeze Folland of Salt Lake City, Utah, Summa cum Laude in English, Charles Leonard Lundin, of New Bedford, Magna cum Laude in Romance Languages and Literature, are the recipients of Sheldon Fellowships.

One further award was announced at the same time that of a traveling scholarship to Edward Osborne Bassett of Watertown, who graduated magna cum Laude in Economics. This award was made possible by a surplus in the Shaw Fund.
