GODKIN PAPERS VALUABLE ACQUISITION AT WIDENER.

Civil War Papers Given to Harvard in June New Catalogued--Godkin on Old Staff of the Nation

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Examination and cataloguing of the papers of E. L. Godkin, former editor of the Nation, have just been completed at the College Library. These papers were presented to the Library by Mrs. Lawrence Godkin in memory of her husband on the fiftieth anniversary of the Commencement of his class, which occurred last June.

Post Civil War Liberalism

E. L. Godkin, A.M. (Hon.) '71, was one of the leaders of the liberal movement which centered about the New York Nation during the period following the Civil War. The papers of others of the same group, including those of James Russell Lowell '38, Charles Eliot Norton '46, and Henry Villard, owner of the Nation, have been in the possession of the Library for some time. The acquisition of the Godkin papers, therefore, serves to round out a rather complete collection of documents bearing on this episode in the social and political history of the United States.

Included in the collection are letters to Godkin from prominent persons still living both in this country and abroad. One of the stipulations connected with the gift is that these letters shall not be made public until after the death of their authors.
