ON THE BOOKS

The promise of severe disciplinary measures henceforth to be taken by the Administrative Board in punishment for mutilation of books belonging to the University and for other breaches of library regulations is wholly to be commended. It is time that the few individuals who seem unable to recognize that use of library books is a privilege, not a right, be made aware of that fact by strong action where remonstrances and public opinion have failed.

Suspension for one year of his degree is a logical punishment for a student who has not yet learned more of the fundamentals of behavior. None can be said to be educated to the extent of a college degree if he still indulges in childish and petty vandalism whether through thoughtlessness or spite. Nothing need be said of one who would smoke among millions of dollars worth of books and manuscripts.

The only unhappy aspect of the new rule is the necessity of its existence.
