COMPETITION FOR CRIMSON STARTS WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Sophomores Try for News, Business, and Photographic Boards--Juniors Write Editorials

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A meeting at 7.30 o'clock on Wednesday evening, September 30, in the CRIMSON building at 14 Plympton Street will mark the start of four competitions each of eight weeks duration. At this time Sophomores will be given an opportunity to become members of the news, business, and photographic departments, while the editorial department will open its doors to Juniors.

The editorial competition is the last in which Juniors may enter, and is generally considered one of the pleasantest approaches to the paper. Candidates, required to submit one editorial daily, which is criticized by members of the board, find that they write more fluently, understand better the workings of the University, and have more clearly defined opinions on a variety of subjects.

Meeting in the President's office, Sophomores will be shown about the building by the heads of the various departments. Business candidates, performing some routine work, devote much time to getting advertisements, under an assignment system. This work, involving many contacts, brings a vast amount of interesting and practical experience.

A wide field is open to the news candidates, who in the course of his competition may leave tracks from the stacks of Baker Library to the inmost recesses of Langdell Hall. Assigned to two or three routine sources, candidates are encouraged to secure "scoops", interviews with a wide variety of victims, and feature stories, and to submit editorial material.

Candidates for the photographic department are required to take and develop photographs of college subjects with CRIMSON cameras, a task calling for initiative and skill.

Attendance at the meeting Wednesday involves no obligation to enter any of the competitions. In these no previous newspaper experience is needed. The fall competition offers the best opportunity for Sophomores, since the next tryout lasts through the midyear examination period.
