To the Editor of the CRIMSON:

These days of "riots", arrests, and clubbings seem entirely unnecessary. The lack of understanding between the Cambridge police force and the undergraduates seems foolish.

During my undergraduate days the police took great pride in their association with the students and with Harvard. Some able chief must have encouraged the policemen to learn to know the undergraduates, to be interested in their activities and to glory with them in celebrations of victories and condole with their sufferings in defeat.

There was a fine gentleman by name of Carney for years in charge of the Square. He knew all the active leaders in college, all the bad actors, all the Harvard Square "students." Carney was always wise enough to be able to steer any incipient riots into the Yard, where everything died quietly.

Why not have friendly baseball games, invite the local policemen to athletic events, entertain them at the clubs and promote a feeling friendship? W. T. Harrison '05.
