VARSITY NINE TO FACE BIG GREEN IN VITAL GAME TODAY

Lockwood Will Cover First Base While Woodruff Plays Short Stop -- Hines Retains Old Position

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Presenting a completely revamped lineup and batting order, the Varsity nine will journey to Hanover today to face the formidable Dartmouth aggregation this afternoon, in what is unquestionably the most crucial engagement of the season. As both the Varsity and Dartmouth are members of the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League and since Columbia, the League leader, which is one-half a game ahead of Harvard, will engage in no league contests this week, a win today for the visitors will regain the League leadership for the Crimson. If the Varsity, however, is downed by Dartmouth, its chances of recapturing first place will be greatly diminished.

New Infield

At last Monday's practise, Coach Mitchell put together an almost entirely new infield, consisting of Lockwood at first base, Hines at second, and Woodruff at short stop, while Murmes and Gleason covered the third sack. Of these men Hines was the only member of the original infield who held his position. Gleason formerly played at first base, while Woodruff has replaced Sargent. The former third baseman, Thacher, has been moved to right field, succeeding to the position previously held by Lupien. Captain McCaffrey will undoubtedly occupy his old berth in left field, although Ware will replace Adams in the other field position.

Battery Unchanged

The battery alone of the team players has escaped the radical shake-up, as Nevin will again start behind the plate, while either Loughlin, Taylor, or McJennett will start in the pitcher's box. Along with the general revamping of the team, deGive, a pitcher on the Jayvees, and Kiernan, an infielder on the same team, have been added to the Varsity squad. The changes in the lineup, so far as can be ascertained, are aimed to steady down the team, a circumstance necessitated by the disastrous defeat the nine suffered at the hands of Holy Cross last Saturday.

Dartmouth, although at present standing fourth in the League percentages, with only three victories out of seven games to its credit, boasts the strongest batting team in he League, with an average of .276. Three of the Green players, Rich, the second baseman, Clark, the catcher, and Hill, right fielder, have batted over .300 in League contests so far this season. Today's contest should prove of interest as far as comparative statistics are concerned. Inasmuch as Dartmouth has defeated Columbia earlier this season.

On Saturday, the team will engage in two more League contests, when it will play a double-header with Cornell.

The Lowell House nine, winner of the Interhouse Baseball League, which defeated the Yale Junior Class team last Saturday at New Haven by the score of 17-6, will play a double-header today, when it meets Winthrop House at 2.15 o'clock, and Dunster House at 4 o'clock at Soldiers Field.
