1893--Born in Dorchester on March 26.

1910--Graduated from the Roxbury Latin School.

1913--Graduated A.B. from Harvard with high honors (as of the class of 1914).

1916--Received his Ph.D. from Harvard; became an instructor in Chemistry.

1918--Commissioned a major in the Chemical Warfare Service; stationed at Cleveland, Ohio, where he was engaged in war gas research.

1919--Appointed an assistant professor of Chemistry at Harvard.

1921--Married Grace Thayer Richards, of Cambridge, on April 17.

1929--Appointed Sheldon Emery Professor of Organic Chemistry.

1933--Elected President of the University by the Corporation on May 8.
