THE FIRST BIRTHDAY

Plans for the writing of the second chapter in the history of the year-old H-Y-P Conference are now well under way. Last year the Conference was notably successful in its aim, the bringing together of important figures in governmental, academic and business life to discuss problems of particularly pertinent interest. By and large it represented a study of that great structure known as government, that bridge between society and the individual. The subjects there represented included foreign trade, agriculture, banking, social security, government and industry, and associated topics.

This year there will be a more distinct general theme--"the role of government in the national economy"--and an attempt will be made to insure the presentation of a well-planned agenda, whether the subject be employment, currency and credit control, or even one of the other subordinate headings. Further, it is planned to bring reports of the conclusions of each forum before a plenary session, there to be read and finally used as the basis for a discussion by a guest speaker. The result, it is easily seen, will be the showing of the whole diamond, rather than merely one face, as would be the case without the final reporting.

The Conference concerns not only the student publications, but the student body as a whole. This year an effort will be made to increase the number of students representing the college. In addition, several meetings, in contrast to last year, will be thrown open to students and faculty members, without reference to their participation in the Conference. In this way many will hear distinguished men in various walks of life who are attending the Conference.

The aim, of course, is to bring national problems of overwhelming importance into full prespective. Last year a number of the "big men" participating expressed their delight at discovering this new method of self-education. That indeed, epitomizes the spirit of a conference in which leaders in various fields collaborate with but a single goal in mind--the building of a broader understanding.
