PRESIDENT CONANT GOES TO ENGLAND FOR MONTH'S REST

Conant to Meet Class of '40 at Special Meeting on His Return -- Probably Back by End of October

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Taking a much needed rest after his arduous Tercentenary duties President and Mrs. Conant sailed for England last Wednesday on the "Queen Mary." Since last April President Conant has had to prepare literally dozens of speeches for the various conferences, meetings, and semi-public events marking the celebration as well as attending to his administrative duties.

No Plans

They have made no plans for their stay in England, but will travel through the country at their leisure. The Conants are travelling tourist-third, peace and quiet being the object of their trip. It was announced unofficially that President Conant was not expected to visit Oxford or Cambridge Universities.

The Conants will also make a short visit to France where they will hire a car and for a week or two forget the academic world.

Special Meeting For Freshmen

This is the first time in many years that the President of the College has not been on hand to welcome personally the incoming Freshmen. After his return, for which no date has been announced but which will probably be about the first of November, President Conant intends to call a special meeting for all members of the class of 1940.

Perkins At Helm

During the absence of the President the senior member of the Corporation, Thomas Nelson Perkins '91, is customarily vested with the Presidential authority. Important decisions, however, are rarely taken without full presidential approval and then only in emergency.
