After intensive daily workouts for three weeks the Varsity polo team will face the Danvers Club today at the Commonwealth Armory in an initial exhibition match.
"There's a big pickup of interest in the game this year," Chester E. Sargent, a major in the field artillery and mentor of both Varsity and Freshman polo, declared yesterday as he sent his men through their third week of drill.
Returning from last season's squad and probably forming the nucleus of this season's are Benjamin H. Dillingham '40, H. Gale Dillingham '40, Captain R. Bennett Forbes '39, and Warwick B. Stabler '40.
Not until after the Christmas holidays, on January 7, will the regular league season begin, Coach Sargent announces as he undertakes the task of building up his second team.
Twenty-eight candidates have reported to the Yardling squad, from which no cut will be made until next year. In the words of Major Sargent, their coach, "eight or ten of the Freshmen have had some polo experience, while three have played quite a bit."
