American Student Defense League's Plan of Military Training Probed

In response to a petition signed by more than 100 students, many of them members of the Student Defense League, the Student Council decided last night to investigate the advisability of starting a system of military training for College students.

Acting through a committee headed by Benjamin A. Barnes '41, the Council will try to determine whether a series of extra-curricular courses would be considered helpful to the defense program and whether they would be accepted by Harvard students. Other members of the committee include Alan Gottlieb '41, Charles Gilfix, Jr. '41, Harrison T. Blaine '42, and Endicott Peabody 2nd '42.

The decision was made after the Student Defense League submitted its petition asking the Council "to investigate and bring to reality the possibility of obtaining War Department supervision of the system of voluntary military training now being developed by the Student Defense League."
