GARDELLA REPLACES McNICOL AT TAILBACK

Brown, Waldstein Vie For Fullback; Harmon "Surpasses Grange"

By Donald Peddle

Big news of yesterday's football practice was the appearance of Captain Joe Gardella at the tailback spot in the place of Sophomore Don McNicol, ruled out of the Michigan game with a leg many. Joe has had previous Varsity experience at tailback and should be able to make the switch without much trouble. This move leaves the fullback position a wide-open scrap between Bill Brown and Mort Waldstein.

Besides McNicol, Mcl Gordon was the only other gridder to come out of the Amherst game with anything more than an ordinary bruise, and he will definitely play against Michigan. He bumped his side, and for a time it was feared that a rib was broken.

Scouts Report

Harvard scouts Wes Fesler and Floyd Stahl returned from Ann Arbor, where they watched Michigan defeat Michigan State last Saturday. They are both lavish in their praise of every aspect of Tom Harmon's play and agree that he even surpasses the immortal Red Grange as a ball carrier.

Harvard spent most of yesterday afternoon trying to strengthen its defenses, against both ground and overland thrusts. These operations were followed by punting and passing drills, with Joe Gardella coming in for a lot of action in his new role.

The Pete Elser-Vern Miller argument for left tackle priority is not yet settled, and Don Forte is not too secure as starting right end.
