MONROE TO BE ACTING MASTER OF KIRKLAND

Arthur E. Monroe '08, lecturer and tutor of Economics, was yesterday named by the University to replace Walter E. Clark '03. Wales Professor of Sanskrit, as acting Master of Kirkland House for the first half of the 1940-41 academic year.

Monroe, who is Managing Editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics, has been a member of the faculty since 1916. He will assume complete charge of Kirkland during Professor Clark's absence.

Master Since 1927

Professor Clark, who has been Master of the House since 1935 and occupied a chair in Sanskrit since 1927, will be on sabbatical leave for the first six months. He will spend most of the time at La Jolla in Southern California where he intends to continue work.

He has been working at the University for 12 years without a sabbatical leave. Ordinarily, professors are allowed to take one every six years. Having travelled in India and the Far East, Professor Clark is the Editor of the Harvard Oriental Series.
