Jenkins, Daniels Lead In Tennis Tournament

Freedman and Lynch Reach Semi-Finals

By Melvin J. Kessel

Varsity tennis captain Jim Jenkins and Don Daniels led the way into the semi-finals of the University Tennis Tournament which has been going along clickoty-clack under the persistent prompting of Coach Jack Barnaby.

After beating John Burton 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round, Jenkins had a very tough battle against Varsity player Ted Cohn in the quarters, finally winning out s-6, 2-6, 9-7. In the other quarter-final match played so far Daniels defeated Charley Greenspan, 6-1, 6-4. These two players, Daniels and Jenkins, will meet to decide the winner of the lower bracket of the tournament.

Freedom Defeats Burton

Bob Freedman of the Business School, seeded number one, had a slight scare in the second round when Gene Sands, last year's Freshman tournament winner, split sets with him before a broken string in Sands' racquet halted the match. But in the reply Freedman won with ease and then went on to defeat Lin Burton, 6-2, 6-2, to emerge into the quarter-finals.

There he will play Jack Lynch, promising September Freshman from Choate, who scored a hard-earned win over Vince Brandt, Freshman from St. George's who has been playing very well this summer. Lynch won in two extra game sets, 12-10, 8-6.

Moley and Hyde to Meet

In the other quarter-final in the upper bracket, Hugh Hyde, tall red-head who ranks high on the Varsity team, will meet up with another player built on the lines of Bill Tilden. He is Mal Moley, a lanky Freshman from california.

Hyde won his quarter-final berth with a victory over Lyman Bullard, 6-1, 7-5, while Moley got a default from Ted Rowse.
