HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
Judging the annual competition for the Boylston prizes for Elocution, to be held in Emerson D tonight at 8 o'clock, will be the Reverend Mr. Palfrey Perkins '05, John M. Maguire, professor of Law, and Frederick C. Packard, Jr., asociate Professor of Public Speaking. Robert S. Hillyer, Jr., Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory, will preside.
Haskell Grodberg '44, the first competitor, will deliver excerpts from "The Funeral Speech of Pericles" by Thusydides, while Nathaniel Laurist '43, will give excerpts from Milton's "Areopagitica."
Lincoln's second inaugural address will be the subject of Jules C. Ladenheim's '44 part and Ralph J. Wedgewood '46, will give the Christmas Sermon from T.S. Eliot's "Murder in the Cathedral." A five minute intermission will be followed by Joseph C. Scott '43, with excerpts from Jonathan Swift's "A Sermon on Sleeping in Church." Sheldon K. Beren '44 will give a letter of Woodrow Wilson's as his part, and John E. Corrigan '44, will give excerpts from a speech of Henry Wallace's. Michael D. Dawson '46, will finish the competition with excerpts from the "Book of Revelations."
