Crimson Nine Tops Boston Embarkation Team, 10 to 2

Wallace Pitches in Opener; Hits Homer

Jack Wallace, star pitcher for several recent Crimson ball clubs, began the summer on the right foot last Saturday by whipping a team from the Boston Port of Embarkation 10 to 2.

Wallace, pitching brilliant ball, retired the first 17 men in order without a hit. His fast ball and curve so completely fooled the opposing batters that ten of them went down swinging. Wallace gave another boost to his cause, and to his record, by blasting out a terrific home run in the third inning with nobody on.

Coach Floyd Stahl's boys jumped on B.P.E. for one run in the initial frame, four in the second, three in the sixth, and two in the eighth. The lone tally in the first inning was picked up on an error and a wild pitch, Jack Forte doing the scoring.

Round the Bases We Go

In the third inning, the boys really got hot and pounded out three hits to score four times. Ken Crumrine led off with a base on balls; he was brought in by Jack Forte's long triple down the right field line, and Forte came riding home on a bingle by Swegan, who stole second and then scored on a wild pitch by B.P.E,'s Leonard. Wallace uncorked his homer to score the fourth run of the inning.

In the sixth, after Crumrine was out, Forte was given a life at first on an error. Roche also got on with an error, moving Forte to third. Swegan promptly singled, scoring Forte and sending Roche to third. Like clock-work! These two then executed a perfect double steal with Roche scoring and Swegan taking second. The last tally of the inning was made when Swegan scored on an infield out and an error.

And Two for Good Measure

Just for good measure, Stahl's charges picked up two more tallies in the eighth frame. Swegan started things going with a single to left field, and Pierce brought him loping across home plate with a long belt down the left field line for three bases. Jack Knowles, who came in for the seventh inning to give Wallace a rest, singled to left and Pierce came romping in with the tenth run of the game. Knowles was cut down trying to pilfer second, and that ended the inning.

The biggest threat that B.P.E. could muster was in the seventh inning, when they gathered two hits from "Lefty" Knowles, but Knowles settled down and struck out the next batter, putting the damper on the inning.

Yesterday the team travelled down to Camp Edwards, in Falmouth, to oppose the Army. Saturday they play host to Holy Cross on Soldiers Field; the Crusaders have beaten Yale, 10 to 0, and Brown, 10 to 1, and Coach Stahl will go all out to win the one.
